Planned Giving

The D.A. Hurd Library gratefully accepts gifts to support library services, to improve the building and grounds, and to increase our endowments.

Gifts of Cash

The town of North Berwick funds about ninety percent of the library's operating expenses. Over the past several years the library's Board of Trustees have made every effort to maintain a flat level of funding despite rises in maintenance and energy costs. This has resulted in a twenty-five percent reduction in our collection development and programming budget. Our annual budget to maintain eleven computers - six for public access - remains at only $1000 despite a growing demand for public use.

Why donate to your library? Tax-deductible cash contributions are a quick and easy way to support the library. These donations are put to immediate use improving library services, adding new materials, and supporting public programs.

You may make a donation to the library by clicking the link below. Checks, made payable to D.A. Hurd Library, may be mailed to or dropped off at the library at 41 High Street, North Berwick, Maine 03906.

Gifts of Securities

Contributions of stock or other securities are a welcome gift at the library. There are potential capital gains benefits if you contribute appreciated securities that you have held for one or more years.

Bequests

Leaving a bequest to the library in your will ensures that you will be making a lasting contibution to help the library. You can designate a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or a portion of the remainder of your estate after providing gifts to your heirs.

Living Trusts

The choice of a living trust allows you to provide for yourself and your family before and after your death. You can arrange a contribution to the D.A. Hurd Library through your living trust by naming the library as a beneficiary.

Gifts of Retirement Plans

The D.A. Hurd Library can be named as a beneficiary of you pension, 401K, IRA, or other retirement plan. This may be the most cost-effective gift that you could make because you avoid the possible double taxation on retirement plan assets left to your heirs.

Gifts of Life Insurance

It is possible that you do not need the benefits of your life insurance coverage that was purchased several years ago. Naming the D.A. Hurd Library as a beneficiary on your policy will provide support for the library in the future.

Gifts of Real Estate

Your charitable contribution of real estate has income and capital gains tax advantages. By choosing a "Retained Life Estate" you can give your personal residence to the library and still maintain lifetime use of the property.

Memorial and Honorary Gifts

Gifts that are made in memory of or in honor of beloved family or friends are a lasting tribute. In the past, such gifts have allowed for designated additions to our materials collection, furniture arrangements, and landscaping in the name of a family or individual.

Gifts of Tangible Items

Gifts of tangible items such as furniture or electronics will be graciously accepted provided they are of use to the library at the time of donation. Guidelines for the use and possible future disposal of such items are similar to those outlined in our Donation Policy relative to gifts of print and audio or video materials.
